Chania, Crete, Greece – A Wonderful Surprise of a Town

We didn’t know what to expect from this town but once we got into the heart of it, we didn’t want to leave!  We found a Starbucks right away, unfortunately, they didn’t have any new mugs that we didn’t already have so at least we didn’t have to walk around all day with a bag full of mugs!

As we walked further in, we got to the water and you just want to dive in and go for a swim.  You can walk over to the right side where you can spend about an hour walking along the shops at first, a couple of museums (2 Euros to enter) and then all along the wall until you get to the end where the lighthouse is.  It doesn’t look far when you are at the dome building (Hassan Pascha Mosque) but you have to go all the way around.  Most times you can walk along the very top so that you can see both sides (water and town) but if you’re not good with heights and narrow uneven walkways, then you can walk below which will still give you great views of the town.  You’ll get some great pictures from that side of the Original Venetian Lighthouse of Chania.  Do the walk, you won’t be disappointed.

After walking back, we stopped for a quick bite to eat, we had the most delicious beet salad with yogurt, celery, quinoa, red onions and tomatoes.  We also had a great Cretan local beer and a Greek soda.  At the end, they served us an alcohol drink and a type of dessert that is something like a chocolate fudge biscotti but not as hard.  They said they make it in house with their own recipe.  It was delicious!  We had something similar at other restaurants throughout our trip in Greece but this dessert was the best.  If you have a chance, look for this restaurant, it is called Salis.

As we walked back, we made our way to the other side of the water, the view wasn’t as good but we still got some shots and if you have the time, you still should walk around.  On the left side we found all the shops and souvenirs.  We found this is the best place to look around, you don’t feel pressured to buy when you walk into stores, perhaps the owners are a little more laid back.  We found a great store that sells everything made with olive oil including soaps, scents, and just about anything else you can think of.

We also found a very nice Fine Porcelain company called Kedima, it’s not handmade as many would like to collect, but we liked this company because they had sets of similar themes from olive cups to soap dishes and more.  We really liked the Greece symbol of the “eye” and wanted to buy a whole bunch of things.  More on this later when we write about our time in Athens.

So we spent the whole day walking around enjoying the sites and shopping of Chania, it was just beautiful weather and scenery, something that we would love to come back to.  If you have a chance to go, do it!  You’ll find the prices here very reasonable.

Tip: If you are going to many islands in Greece and need souvenirs, from our experience, Chania was the cheapest.  Mykonos and Athens were higher priced for the same items that we looked at.  So load up!
