Budapest, Hungary – One Great But Long Day!

We left Vienna early in the morning by train to get to Budapest.  We loved the train as it was so new and even had free wifi!  However, that didn’t last long as the train stopped and we were all asked to get off.  We were pretty confused as to what was happening but luckily another person on the train knew and told us because of the rain floods happening all over Europe, we had to get off, get on a bus to cross the river and then get on another train to get into Budapest.  This unfortunate incident put a time constraint on our time in Budapest and what should have been a 3 hour trip became 5 hours!

We got in later than expected but my client was there to greet us at the train station and took us all around the city.  First stop was the top of the Budapest Castle where we had great views of the famous Chain Bridge.  As mentioned the rains were the worst in a century in Europe at the time of our trip so the water was just below the bridge!  No boats or even canoes would have fit under!  The water was at a dangerous high and trees along what would have been the riverside were completely submerged.

Shortly after, we ducked into a cozy cafe just outside of the Budapest Castle and had a cappuccino and some pastries.  European countries sure know how to bake!  We then took a walk into town and walked about 1/3 of the way across the Chain Bridge.  The water was so close and everyone around was just in awe at how close it was!

We got to see St. Stephen’s Basilica and just right there was a Starbucks!  I know, it’s bad of me to be excited more about the Starbucks than a historical site but if you’ve been following, we are avid collectors of Starbucks City Mugs and this was pretty special to get one in Budapest.

Next we went for lunch were he ordered some traditional Hungarian food.  Delicious but a little too heavy for my better half for lunch.  Especially the bread that you dip straight into duck fat!

My client is pretty fond of food because after lunch we went to a beautiful cafe called The Book Cafe. It was a quite a tourist attraction due to the beautiful setting, unfortunately, it is no longer open.  We enjoyed another cappuccino and ice cream there and just enjoyed the scenery of the overall cafe.  Such a shame they couldn’t stay in business.

Unfortunately time ran out for us, we had to head back to the train station in which we got on an old train where we basically had to sit on the floor with all the other passengers trying to make it back to Vienna, it was just packed!  But after the train, a bus, and another train we made it back.

A memorable day in Budapest, just glad it wasn’t raining at that time when we were there.

Thanks
