Salerno (Pompeii), Italy – A Piece of History Unearthed

We got off our ship and hopped on the bus to take us to the town drop-off spot.  We were right along the water so it was a great view.  As we headed towards the town center and then decided (albeit a bit late) to head to Pompeii.  We got tickets although it was a bit of chaos as there was 3 ticket machines and everybody was confused.  One helper was there that thankfully spoke English so he helped as quickly as possible, not an easy job, so thanks to him for his patience, especially on this hot day.

Once we got the tickets, please..please..please make sure you know what platform you need to go to.  There is one platform up the stairs and then another platform to the left and hidden behind, those are the trains that go to Pompeii.

The train ride to Pompeii was about 45 minutes so plan ahead and check the schedule for when you need to return if you are on a cruise.

The Clock Tower in Pompeii.

Once out of the train station, head straight into the city and then turn left once you hit the clock tower.  Keep heading left until you see the gates to the ticket booth.  This is the side entrance to Pompeii.  The grounds are absolutely huge, so you will need 3 hours minimum to just get around, take pictures, see some of the homes and then get out of the main gate which is at the other end.  There is a train station there as well but make sure that you don’t wait there as that is not the same one that you got off of from Salerno.  You’ll have a 20 minute walk back along the street to get back to the clock tower and then turn right to get back to the train station.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have much time to look around Salerno itself as we had to hoof it back to the pick up/drop off spot to get back to our ship.  We just made it and took the last bus back.  All-in-all, we had a great time at Pompeii and saw a piece of history that’ll we’ll remember for a lifetime.

Tip: Plan ahead to get there and know which station you will arrive in.  Bring good comfortable walking shoes and sunglasses as the dust can kick up from the wind.  Wet wipes would be handy before eating anything to wash your hands.

Thanks
