Kotor, Montenegro – Captivating Scenery and A Hot Hike

We woke up early at 6am to see the cruise ship sail in to the fjords but it wasn’t early enough! We already arrived and were in the middle of two mountains with a view that cannot be described. Being on a huge 113 ton cruise ship you would think you’re one of the largest objects but once you see those mountains surround you, it feels claustrophobic!

Once we got on land, we went through the Old Town which felt like a blast from the past. It is charming and slightly confusing due to the twist and turns with narrow ways. We read that this was done on purpose to help confuse pirates that came to shore to attack centuries ago. You can find souvenir shops, a small museum, churches, food and lot’s of restaurants here.

Walk to the back and up an unseemly pathway to start the hike up to the top of the mountain. You go up a bit around a turn and then you get to the turnstile where a guy sits there to collect a fee to go up. 8 Euros per person, not exactly cheap but worth the hike because the views are breathtaking. It will take roughly 50-60 minutes to get to the top. It is a good challenging hike, not the best if you have knee problems or any medical issues. It does get steep and it was pretty hot during our time in August so bring water, go at your own pace and rest when you need to.

Once back down, we went to a market just outside and to the left of the Old Town, really just 100 meters away. You’ll find fresh vegetables, fruits, meats and cheeses there.

We walked along the shoreline and found a bunch of restaurants, we wanted to try something local so we stopped and had a bite. I had a pizza and my wife ordered mussels, both were delicious.

In terms of site seeing, Kotor was the highlite of the trip with the rolling mountains and picturesque views from all angles.

Safe Travels!

Tip: Wake up even earlier to see the ship sail into the fjords, the pictures you take will last a lifetime. When hiking up to the top, if you have any knee problems take a walking stick with you. It’ll ease the stress especially on the way down.
