Helsinki, Finland – Peaceful and Serene

We arrived in Helsinki and once off the ship, we had a short bus ride that took us near the city center.  We had a nice walk through the Esplanadi Park and then quickly found the Market Square, where they sell everything from fruits, veggies, stuffed toys, fried fish and a rice dish that looks similar to Spanish Paella but without the shrimp and mussels.

A short walk and up a slight hill was Uspenski Cathedral.  Quite a nice view from there as you can see a lot of the city.  The Cathedral was also immaculate with a colourful palette.

Not too far away with a huge open square was Helsinki Cathedral.  It is probably the most recognizable structure in Helsinki with its white walls and green domes.  Visited by over 350,000 people each year, it is one sight you won’t and probably can’t miss.

As we walked back into the downtown core, we couldn’t resist stopping for a nice cappuccino and some meringue!  Man, that was a treat, could have had a second coffee and meringue!

We then hoofed it over to Temppeliaukio Church, better known as Church of the Rock or Rock Church.  It is built directly into solid rock!

On our walk back we cut through an area in which there were some really cool looking condos with floor to ceiling glass windows and a very modern style.  Our last stop was through the Helsinki Central Station and the square there.

We only had a day there but we covered quite a bit of ground.  Helsinki is a beautiful city and everywhere we saw people eating lunch they would have a salad with salmon, no wonder why everyone from Finland is so healthy!

Thanks
