Athens, Greece – Love This City, We Had to Come Back for an Encore

We were Athens, Greece last year and spent 3 days here.  We loved it so much that we had to come back again a year later.  We only stayed one night this time before we took a short flight to stay in Santorini for 5 nights.

Athens was still the same as we remembered, albeit, it was only a year ago.  We still loved seeing the Acropolis but didn’t enter the grounds this time to go see the Parthenon.  We just admired it from below and enjoyed the liveliness of the Plaka at night.  We sat right in the middle of the Plaka to have dinner at Adriano’s Restaurant.  The fish was excellent as was my soulvakis dish.  Inside the restaurant they played live music and you can see all the broken plates on the ground.  Opa!

Walking around the Acropolis is just beautiful and reminds us of why we need a vacation.  To see a structure high in the sky and built hundreds of years ago just boggles the mind at the skill and determination that it took.  We find this city to be extremely safe with all the tourists around, just as any place you visit, secure your belongings and be aware of your surroundings and you’ll be completely fine.

Since we only stayed one night and our flight took off next day in the late afternoon, we did have a bit of time to hop on a small train for 6 Euros that took us around the city.  It is right near the start of the Plaka and near the main Metro station of Monastiraki.  If you need to get off your feet for a bit, we recommend taking this 45 minute ride to see the places a bit further out and save your legs.

HINT:  Since this was our first stop in Europe, we went to Vodafone and got a 10 Euro sim card which works flawlessly in Europe and gave us 5GB of data!  When we did arrive in Italy, you do have to change the settings on your phone to allow roaming to get the sim card to work for other countries.  This was the best 10 Euros we spent on our 3 week trip and kept us connected across Europe with Google Maps all the time (as well as email and other social media).

Thanks
