The Westin Grand Frankfurt Review – Is It Really That Grand?

We did our research on the hotels in Frankfurt and knew that this hotel was recently renovated. We were also thinking of the JW Marriott Hotel Frankfurt which we also reviewed but thought that the renovated Westin Grand Frankfurt would be a good choice.

The Westin Grand Frankfurt – Entrance

Upon arriving at the hotel, you couldn’t really get a sense of the size from the outside as the vehicle drop off area, or portes-cocheras to those that know, puts you directly in front of the revolving doors and under cover in case of rain. Once you enter, you can then get an idea that this newly renovated hotel is quite huge.

The Westin Grand Frankfurt – Lobby

The lobby is wide, spacious and has a high ceiling. Although, it isn’t as grand as something like a St. Regis, you get more of a business convention feel to it. To the left are the elevators, straight up the middle leads you to the Main Tapas Lounge Restaurant and to the right are seating areas, the check-in area and the self serve snacks area.

The Westin Grand Frankfurt – Main Tapas Lounge

We saw a video of Alex at Uncut Travel by Alex having a meal here and we thought for sure that we were going to have dinner here as well. However, as we only had two nights here, we got caught up elsewhere and didn’t have a chance to eat here. We did take a walk around and took photos of the area and menu:

The Westin Grand Frankfurt – 2nd Level

At the time of our stay, not much was happening here, no conventions or meetings so the rooms were basically empty and void of people. There’s really not too much to say here except that there was a lot of open space and would look like a great place for business to hold conventions.

The Westin Grand Frankfurt – Breakfast Restaurant

We didn’t have breakfast lined up here at this hotel so we couldn’t attest to how good/bad it was. The area did look decent though although smaller than I thought it should be for the number of rooms in this hotel.

The Westin Grand Frankfurt – The Room

We had a room on the 6th floor which was pretty decent and facing the main road, however, as we walked towards the room, the hallway started to smell like a sewer and the further we went towards our room, the stronger the odour became. We did enter and take photos of the room but the smell was just so bad that we had to go down and speak to the front desk. We ended up moving to a room on the 5th floor which didn’t have much of a view but we didn’t care as the smell was not here. The rooms were almost identical in layout.

The room itself was decent, new and clean. However, the design of the bathroom was atrocious. If someone was sitting on the toilet and another person came in, the person on the toilet would lose their legs. The door swings in and would take off your toes, foot and then anything from the knees down. We also wish there were two sinks but the bathroom was too small to fit it. If all the rooms were renovated, you would have thought they would have made the bathrooms slightly bigger with a better layout. This was our major gripe about the room.

As for the smell, upon our check-out, the front desk did explain that a restaurant just installed venting and it blows into the hotels vents now and it’s something that they will have to address. So we hope for all guests and the hotels’ sake, they get this addressed soon as it was a real foul smell.

The Westin Grand Frankfurt – Pool

We have to say, we loved the Burdock Hotel Istanbul’s Pool, Steam and Sauna area but The Westin Grand Frankfurt’s pool, steam and sauna room has them beat. The pool itself was quite a bit larger and they had a unique split floor where you can relax up on the second floor area where the steam room, sauna and showers are. The steam room was large and quite hot which was perfect. The sauna was also large with three tiers of seats in an “L” shape. There were also two showers there and lots of lockers.

The Westin Grand Frankfurt – Gym

The gym had a bit of a strange layout as it was long and skinny. However, it did have a decent amount of equipment and the one thing we really liked was the water station. You have the option to get carbonated water there as well as regular still water. I won’t go into all the details of the equipment so feel free to peruse the photos below.

Conclusion

The multi-million dollar renovation of this hotel certainly shows as it was upgraded in every corner and wall. Nothing was left untouched, however, the room itself would have benefitted from a better layout of the washroom as it just made no sense. I mean, if you have a door like that, why not use a barn door or sliding door instead? Also, the shower could really use a door as the water just gets everywhere. The lack of universal power outlets should have also been addressed as Frankfurt is an International hub for travelers and businesses. We also hope that the smell issue has been addressed as it was there the three nights that we stayed, granted, not in the room or the hallway where we moved to on the 5th floor, but when you went up to the 6th floor, you can smell it right out of the elevator.

As we didn’t try the breakfast or the Main Tapas Lounge, we can’t really judge those areas but they looked decent and very clean. If you have gotten this far, then you could tell that the highlight of this hotel from our perspective was the complimentary use of the pool, steam and sauna rooms. At the time of the year we visited, we certainly used these areas and with much appreciation as we really needed to warm up after walking around the city all day long in 10 degree Celsius weather.
