Anchorage, Alaska, USA – The Land of the Midnight Sun

From Toronto, we flew to Vancouver, BC and then had a couple of hours before we flew to Anchorage, Alaska.  Once landed we grabbed a taxi and got to our hotel, The Sheraton Anchorage Hotel & Spa.  It was a bit of a rainy day so we hoofed it to the Anchorage 5th Avenue Mall which is the main mall.  It’s not huge but there were a few stores of interest to us.  As it was later in the evening for us losing a few hours due to the time difference and flying all day we were pretty tired so we headed back to our hotel, had some dinner and hit the sack.

The next day, it was pretty nice outside being sunny and calm.  We decided to take a shuttle bus and visit the Alaska Zoo, it was about 20-25 minutes away.  They had a nice souvenir shop, washrooms and light snacks there.  Right off the start, you get to see the polar bear.  Such a beautiful animal but you get the feeling that he/she was sad being confined in the zoo.  There were so many different species of birds, hawks, foxes, cats, and other animals there.  A baby yak was just born so that was pretty unique to see.  Black bears, hawks, wolves, tigers, mountain goats, and even llamas were there to see!  Kids would love it here, the grounds were pretty large so plan about 2 hours if you go through very quickly, best to take 3-4 hours to really see all the animals.

We got back to town and asked where a good place for lunch, we were told F St. Station was good.  It was pretty busy there and had a very relaxed style where you seated yourself.  We had a clam chowder and French onion soup, both were good.

After lunch we hopped on a tour bus that took us around Alaska and pointed out the history of town and points of interest.  It was a great bus ride, entertaining and educational.  The tour guide was born and raised in Alaska and you could tell she was proud to share her history with us.

As the day winded down, we went back to our hotel, it was one of the taller buildings in Anchorage so we had a nice view of the town and mountains in the background.  Next day we were on our way to meet up with our cruise ship, the Star Princess.

Thanks
