Turkish Airlines 777-300ER Review – Rome to Istanbul – Is This Business Class Still Competitive?

From the Eternal City to the City of the World’s Desire. We couldn’t be more excited to hop on this flight to a city that we have been wanting to visit for years. We have done a layover in Istanbul before but never got out of the airport, only to enjoy the wonderful Turkish Airlines Business Class Lounge. However, before we get to Istanbul, we have to leave from Rome on an older 777-300ER Business Class with a 2-2-2 layout. Does this layout still compete with the newer class of seats? Read on fellow travelers.

Turkish Airlines 777-300ER Business Class

We boarded the plane and were not surprised as we have been on this exact layout before about a year ago. Yes, the plane is old and the hard product cannot compare to the newer style pods which offer way more privacy. The soft product and service though was top notch. We sat right in the front on row 1 seats K and J. You will not lack any leg room as it is a very long reach to the foot bench. You will have to use the IFE controller as there’s no way to reach the TV screen, which, now that I think about it, can’t even remember if it is a touch screen or not.

One major note, if you are a solo flyer, you may not want to book the window seat. If your neighbour is in flat bed mode, you will have to do some yoga maneuvering to climb over them without disturbing them. Although the plane was older, it was kept in pretty decent shape.

Turkish Airlines 777-300ER Food

One thing that usually doesn’t disappoint on Turkish Airlines is the food. We have experienced super slow service in the past but this was a quick 3 hour flight so service was quite speedy here.

Turkish Airlines 777-300ER Entertainment

The entertainment was good but not the best, you won’t get the full selection of movies or TV shows like newer planes. The screen was also older so it wasn’t as sharp and clear as the newer A350-900’s. The headphones were the same though across the brand and my better half enjoyed the sound quality of them.

Turkish Airlines 777-300ER Lavatory

Considering the age of the aircraft, the lavatory was in pretty decent condition. It was clean, tidy and stocked with Molton Brown hand soap, hand lotion and a diffuser. There was even an air nozzle that pointed in the direction of the diffuser to help bring out the smell. The faux flower was a nice touch too.

Conclusion

Although we do prefer the Turkish Airlines newer products from their A350-900’s, the 777-300ER was still not the worst business class. Yes, it is dated, but Turkish Airlines is retrofitting their fleet to the newer seats, it just takes time. The soft product is where it is at though so you will definitely enjoy the service and the food. For this short 2h50m flight, this was just fine and we would definitely fly Turkish Airlines again.
